How To Optimize Your Energy Efficiency This Winter

Air Patrol Air Conditioning is proud to meet the heating needs of our residential customers in Dallas-Fort Worth and the surrounding areas. While our area enjoys mild winters, many homeowners experience heating bills that surprise them and are higher than they would like. Here are some tips on how to optimize your energy efficiency.

PREP YOUR SYSTEM

Many homes in Texas have heat pumps, so an annual inspection and tune-up is often enough. You may have already done that in the spring. If you have a furnace, it is highly recommended that you schedule a tune-up sometime in fall. This will help ensure energy efficiency and avoid any unpleasant surprises.

CLEAN YOUR THERMOSTAT AND FILTERS

Some of this may be done for you during your tune-up, but stay on top of it throughout the season. Cleaning a thermostat is as easy as removing the face and clearing out the dust, including in between the contacts. Filters should be checked regularly and replaced as soon as the dust coating is visible.

SET CEILING FANS

A ceiling fan set to a clockwise rotation is very effective at pushing warmed air down into a room. Ceiling fans throughout a home can let you set a thermostat several degrees lower than otherwise.

CHECK FOR DRAFTS

If you experience drafts due to doors, windows or cracks, consider long-term solutions. In the meantime, save by using simple solutions like door socks and painter’s plastic.

SMART TEMPERATURE SETTINGS

Setting and forgetting your thermostat during winter will cause you to spend much more than necessary. Instead, organize your day into blocks—such as sleep, work, home—and determine an ideal temperature for each. Smart or even programmable thermostats are a convenient and cost-effective way to do this, and they save you a great deal of money over the course of a year.
